Hey! It’s Julianne Murray and I am here for our Murray Monday Minute.
Last week, I said we were going to talk about the structure of the office of the Attorney General and that I wanted to focus on not necessarily just the Criminal Division, but the other hats that come out of this office.
This week I am focused on what’s called the Civil Division and it is headed by somebody that is appointed by the Attorney General called the State Solicitor.
The State’s Solicitor is responsible for all civil actions and matters where the state, its agencies or subdivisions are involved.
So, there are actually seven different agencies within this division:
Admin Law and Education where they handle the Department of Education and administrative matters.
We’ve got the Affirmative Litigation Division, which handles professional licensing.
We have the Defensive Litigation, which handles things, where like DSP or Department of Corrections are named.
We have Departments and Agencies Division, which handles things like the Department of Finance, the Division of Revenue, things like that.
We have the Environmental Unit, which works with DNREC.
We have the Government Services Unit, which is a huge one which handles Department of State, the Lottery Office, ONB, Office of Pensions, things like that
And then we have the Health and Public Safety. They handle Department of Health and Human Services, Healthcare Commission, civil commitments, things like that.
This is not an all inclusive list. There’s tons of agencies. I just kind of wanted to give you an idea.
The Civil Division, what is significant about it is it's like a little private law firm, it has about 60 Deputy Attorneys General, 17 admin staff currently - at least that is what the websites has right now - but this own little law firm that just works for representing the state. So, gives you an idea.
