Welcome to our Murray Monday Minute.
When we finished last time, I told you we are going to talk about cash bail, what it is and why ending it is such a bad idea.
Okay, so, #1 what it is?
It is the most serious level, highest level of bail, meaning the most money has to be paid. That is because it is the more serious crimes, it is more serious offenders.
So, this year our current AG made it a legislative priority that she wants to end the cash bail.
Sounds good - not such a good idea.
I told you before that we did bail reform here in Delaware a couple of years ago and I am holding up a bill from this year that I am going to explain, but basically prior to this, it basically said the defendant charged with committing a violent felony involving a firearm or with committing a violent felony while on probation would get cash bail.
It wasn’t explicit enough.
Look at this, pages, pages now of crimes that are now, according to our general assembly worthy of cash bail and we have an AG that wants to end it.
So, it makes sense. Does that sound like its good for public safety? I don’t think so.
Tune in next week for our next Murray Monday Minute.
